Match Preview LAFC: Son set for home debut as San Diego FC visit for first time ever

While the chances are still slim that LAFC do enough to finish the season atop the Western Conference as they head into playoffs, a win tonight over current leaders San Diego FC would definitely put the pressure on. This is the first time ever San Diego FC has made the trip north to take on Los Angeles at BMO, as the newest MLS Club look to continue their phenomenal inaugural season with a result on the road tonight. It will be an even more special occasion for the black & gold, as not only do they return from their road trip, but they do so with their newest signing, Son Heung-Min, who will make his highly anticipated home debut tonight as well. It will definitely be a raucous crowd and party atmosphere as the team look for the three points to really cap off celebrations.

San Diego have lost just one of their last five, riding a four-match unbeaten run at the moment, with three of those four being wins. They have also been a stout defensive team, allowing just three goals in their last five, with two coming in their lone loss. Forwards Hirving Lozano and Anders Dreyer will be the ones to watch for the visitors, as the one-two punch for San Diego are responsible for a combined 21 goals and 21 assists. It was San Diego who came away with the win in their inaugural matchup, when they hosted LAFC back in March, coming away with the 3-2 win. That said, this is very much a different Los Angeles side, and it isn’t just because they will now be at home.

LAFC are in the midst of a six-match unbeaten run but have only lost once in their last eleven outings. A team that has seemingly turned the corner with form and looking to improve their standings. We mentioned there was an outside chance of sneaking into the top spot when its all said and done, that is because LAFC still hold three games in hand over San Diego, which is a possible nine points, as they currently sit just 12 points off the top spot. A win tonight would really put them in a position to make it interesting as we come down the stretch of the regular season. Tonight will be also be the home debut for Son, who has rejuvenated the Los Angeles attack, and recently opened his account with his first goal. Everyone will be hoping he can continue scoring, and open his home account tonight against San Diego.
